What is Proximity Marketing?

Gem 1.png
HBSU is always looking at the newest technology when it comes to business marketing tools.  The lastest breakthrough we are testing out, utilizes bluetooth technology to broadcast marketing messages to Android cellphones nearby.   We call it Proximity Marketing.

Proximity marketing basically means, reaching your nearby prospective customers, in the right place, at the right time.  The Royaltie Gem uses bluetooth and Google's "nearby technology" to broadcast marketing alerts to every Android phone within 100 meters in all directions.  The average person checks their cell phone 46 times a day, so think of the advertising possibilities for a walk up business, conference and trade shows, and anywhere people gather in numbers.   Your alert message will link to whatever website or social media platform you want it to, so this means more eyeballs on your business, at a very affordable rate.

Here's how it works:

Royaltie gives you a tiny wireless device called a Royaltie Gem.  You decide the promotional message you want to broadcast, up to 40 characters in length.   The Royaltie Gem sends your message to every nearby Android smartphone.   If people are curious, and they usually are, they will click on your message and be taken to the site you link to the message.   It's certainly not a guaranteed sale, but nothing out there is, but it does mean more people will see your business, and that should help your business grow.

(Android represents 60% of the North American smartphone market. To receive Royaltie messages, the phone just needs Bluetooth turned on.)

The possiblities are endless.  A restaurant can broadcast any specials they are running each day and people passing by will get the alert on their phone, and customers already in the restaurant will have access to these "upsells".    A hair salon can broadcast hair cut and product specials, or alert people there are open appointment slots.  This is especially effective at malls and strip malls, where foot traffic is heavy in small area.   And a business at a trade show, can use broadcast messages to bring more traffic to their booth with enticing special offers or new product innovations.  Use of the gem is only limited by your imagination.

Many business struggle with finding effective ways to market and advertise, and often waste a lot of money on ineffective campaigns.   The Gems are just $49 a month for 3 gems, with no contract, so you can try them out and quickly see if they work for your business.  I tested them out recently at lacrosse tournament,  where there were several thousand people, and got 160 views on one facebook page, and 83 on another, so they do attract views.  You just have to find the right message and website combination to make it pay for your business.

Another approach businesses are taking is to get one gem for each employee, and have a walking marketing army carrying your company message wherever they go before and after work.  This can be very effective if the employees have a stake in more business coming their way, such as hair stylists, restaurant waitstaff, bartenders, and many other service industry employees.  Again, you can do an inexpensive trial, since the gems are a low cost marketing alternative.

Webinars and live stream conferences allow companies to stage events without requiring travel by the audience.   This saves everybody involved, time and money.   Webinars are great for marketing, training, coaching, and introducing people and products.  If you have a computer or mobile device with a web camera, you can easily setup webinars and conferences, using free software like Zoom or Facebook Live, or you can use more sophisticated meeting software like Webex or Go to Meeting.   Whatever you use, the idea is to bring people together in a public but captive environment, where you control the information flow.  It's a great way to share your content and ideas while also marketing your business.

HBSU is using the gem in combination with our new VCards option.  VCards are virtual business cards, that eliminate the time, cost and waste of printed business cards, and give you and your business another online platform to market your business.  Rather than hand out costly printed cards, that mostly end up in someones shoebox or waste bin, a vcard is transferred to other people via text message, email, or direct online download.  I simply put a broadcast message on a gem that links to my VCard.   It's an awesome way to attact new interest in my business.

  • "I am extremely pleased with the videography work of Michael Connell at HBSU.  I contacted him just a few days before performing in a live symphonic concert at Boston's Wilbur Theater, hoping to find someone to film the show.  He was very quick to respond and not only captured excellent HD footage from multiple angles, but also took care of recording audio directly into the live mixing board - something I hadn't even thought of!  He was a professional in every sense of the word, and I wouldn't hesitate to use his services again."

  • I was initially overwhelmed with the project of scheduling and shooting videos of 16 of our doctors and providers. But working with Mike was extremely easy--his flexibility and low-key professionalism made the entire project come together easily over 4 separate shooting days. He put the subjects at ease which allowed them to talk easily about their passion for medicine. I am happy to have found such a great resource for future video projects.
